You'll want to get to this place if you're hitchhiking to Rio Gallegos or Punta Arenas without approaching drivers at fuel stations. But be aware that there is no fuel station here, and it's a bit of a walk to any shelter. Stand where cars are coming out of the "rotunda" (roundabout) headed northwest. I failed to get a ride here in the late afternoon, but then succeeded the next morning (with snow coming down hard - maybe I got some pity points). Ride was headed all the way to Gallegos, and even offered to take me as far as Caleta Olivia the next day. Also tried a couple kilometers up the road at the Mision Silesiana, where there's also a good place to pull over, but it seemed like most cars were going too fast.

If you're hitchhiking in the winter without cold-weather camping gear, be very wary about taking rides that aren't going all the way to your destination - the route is mostly uninhabited except for scattered cattle ranches and border posts, and you could get stranded overnight in some lethally cold, shelterless areas (potentially including the junction where traffic splits going either to Rio Gallegos or Punta Arenas).

If you travel by approaching drivers at fuel stations, this is the place. If you're using only thumbs on the roadside and trying to go north (as I was), stand across the "circunvalacion" (bypass road) from the fuel station, where traffic from both southwest and northeast is funneled into the northward route. This was where I got the most reactions (and eventually a ride), even with the sun at my back. And if you're not using the fuel station to approach drivers, consider accepting a ride that just goes to the rotunda (roundabout) at the north end of town. If you're trying to get to Rio Gallegos, start in the morning - I spent a whole afternoon here and was only able to get to the other side of town. Most drivers start early because it's a long drive, especially in the winter when daylight is short and road conditions can be bad.

Got a late afternoon ride to Rio Grande in the winter in about half an hour, thumb only. I think I stood about 100 meters north of where the dot is, where the wide street meets the highway from the northwest, though the ride came from the highway itself.

not so bad, but not so good either. direction Rio Gallegos, you will have to eventually go here or you wait on the connection road before Rio Grande. Do not get inside the city! Use that connection road going to the Airport and Laguna de los Cisnes.

Great for Rio Grande and Ushuaia (it's the police post)... anything further north, ask drivers to bring you to the connection road bypassing Rio Grande.

Neste lugar existe uma balança destivada onde se pode pedir carona para sair da ilha.

The intersection where trucks bypassing the city come to, to go north as well as south.

Good for both Ushuaia and Rio Gallegos (and Rio Grande center of course).
